🏅 QS World Rank #2
Imperial College London — Full Profile & Ranking 2026
The UK’s top STEM-focused research university — QS World Rankings 2027 (joint #2)
Imperial College London is a public research university in London, founded in 1907, that teaches only science, engineering, medicine, and business. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 (announced June 2026), Imperial placed joint 2nd in the world, tied with Stanford, and was the highest-ranked university in the UK and Europe. This guide covers Imperial’s academic structure, undergraduate and postgraduate admissions, 2026–27 tuition fees, scholarships including Imperial Inspires, practical advice for applicants from Pakistan, and the questions prospective students ask most. Every figure is labeled with its year or ranking edition.
Imperial College London Overview
Imperial was founded in 1907 and describes itself as a community focused solely on science, engineering, medicine, and business. It is organized into four faculties: Engineering, Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Imperial Business School. Its main campus is in South Kensington, in central London, close to major museums and the city’s technology and finance sectors.
Imperial has a strong research profile and a highly international student body. For international applicants it is relevant at every level: undergraduates apply through the UK’s central UCAS system, while taught master’s and research applicants apply directly to Imperial.
Imperial College London Rankings — QS World University Rankings 2027
Imperial was ranked joint 2nd in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in June 2026. It shares the position with Stanford University, and it is the highest-ranked university in both the UK and Europe in this edition. QS ranks universities using academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student-to-faculty ratio, and measures of international faculty and international students.
This is a QS-specific result and should not be read as one universal ranking. Other organizations use different methods and can place the same university differently. For example, Imperial was ranked 8th in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, a separate system with its own indicators.

Admission Requirements
Imperial uses the UK admissions system. Undergraduate and postgraduate applications are handled differently, and requirements vary by course.
Undergraduate Admissions (2027 Entry)
Details follow Imperial’s official admissions pages, checked October 2026. Dates and fees change every year, so confirm them before applying.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| How to apply | Through UCAS, the UK’s central application service. Imperial’s UCAS institution code is I50. |
| Number of choices | Up to five courses. Medicine, dentistry, and veterinary applicants can choose a maximum of four in any one of those subjects. |
| Medicine deadline | 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time (MBBS Medicine and Graduate Entry Medicine, and applications to Oxford or Cambridge) |
| All other courses | 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time (equal consideration deadline) |
| UCAS fee | £34.50 for 2027–28 entry, however many courses you choose. No deposit is required for undergraduate study. |
| Admissions tests | Most courses require a test such as ESAT or TMUA; Medicine uses UCAT, and Graduate Entry Medicine uses GAMSAT. Imperial lists test windows of 12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027 for this cycle. |
| Qualifications | A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, and other recognized qualifications on Imperial’s accepted list. Grades and subjects are set per course. |
| IB minimum | 38 to 40 points overall, with grades 6 or 7 in specified Higher Level subjects |
| English language | Required for non-native speakers at a Standard or Higher level depending on the course (see below) |
English language levels. Imperial sets a Standard or Higher English requirement for each course. For IELTS Academic, the commonly published levels are 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component for Standard, and 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component for Higher. Equivalent TOEFL iBT scores are 92 and 100. Check your course page and Imperial’s English language requirements page for the exact level and accepted tests.
Postgraduate Admissions
Taught master’s and research applications go directly to Imperial and do not use UCAS. Each department sets its own deadlines, academic requirements, and supporting documents, and English requirements follow the same Standard or Higher system. Apply early for competitive courses, and check the specific course page for deadlines, because they differ by program.

Imperial College London Acceptance Rate
Imperial does not publish a single headline acceptance percentage. Its undergraduate statistics for 2024–25 entry, as summarized by the education site Collegedunia, show 31,533 applications and 3,119 new admissions, about 10 applications for every new student. For Medicine (course code A100), the same summary reports 2,130 applications, 662 offers, and 340 confirmed places for the 2025 cycle.
Competition varies widely by course, and Imperial publishes applications-per-place figures on individual course pages. Treat any single “acceptance rate” you see online as an estimate. Check the course page you are interested in on Imperial’s website.

Scholarships & Financial Aid
- Imperial Inspires (2027 entry): Imperial is offering at least 300 scholarships worth £15,000 per year, for each year of the course, to international students who pay the Overseas rate of tuition. It covers undergraduate and selected postgraduate taught courses across Imperial’s faculties. Eligible applicants who meet entry requirements are invited to apply when applications open in October 2026, and the award is merit-based.
- Imperial scholarships search: Imperial lists many other awards, mostly for taught and research master’s students, including GREAT partnership scholarships with the British Council. Countries and amounts change from year to year, so check which ones are open to Pakistani applicants.
- Other funding: external UK scholarships exist outside Imperial itself. See our guide to fully funded scholarships for 2027.
Scholarships do not cover every cost and are not guaranteed. Read each scheme’s eligibility rules and deadlines. Official source: Imperial Inspires scholarships and the scholarships search.
Imperial College London for Pakistani Students
Applicants from Pakistan follow the same process as other international applicants. Imperial does not run a separate Pakistan-specific admissions track. Practical points:
- Qualifications: Imperial evaluates international qualifications against its accepted list, and undergraduate entry is based on A-level equivalent attainment. Check that your exact qualification is listed, and if it is not, ask Imperial’s admissions team or consider A-levels or the IB.
- Course requirements: mathematics and science subjects are required for most courses, and many need an admissions test such as ESAT or TMUA
- English: prepare an IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT score at the Standard or Higher level for your course. Our IELTS preparation guides can help.
- Funding: Imperial Inspires is open to students who pay the Overseas rate, so eligible Pakistani applicants can be invited to apply. Pakistan’s eligibility for GREAT scholarships varies by year.
- Visa and travel planning: international students generally need a UK student visa, and decisions are made by UK immigration authorities, not by Imperial. Imperial’s guidance for admitted students explains the steps.
- Agents: you apply directly through UCAS (undergraduate) or Imperial (postgraduate), so a paid agent is not required
Campus & Student Life

- Undergraduates can take electives outside their own discipline through Imperial’s I-Explore programme
Research & Career Opportunities
- Imperial ranks 8th in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, reflecting its research strength across engineering, medicine, and the sciences
- London’s technology, finance, healthcare, and engineering employers are close to campus, which supports internships and placements on many courses
- Imperial does not guarantee employment, salary, or immigration outcomes. Graduate outcome statistics describe past cohorts and are not promises.
