University College London (UCL) — Full Profile & Ranking 2026
London’s broad-based research powerhouse — QS World Rankings 2027 (joint #8)
University College London (UCL) is a public research university in central London, founded in 1826. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 (announced June 2026), UCL ranked joint 8th in the world, tied with ETH Zurich and up from 9th. This guide covers UCL’s programmes, UCAS and postgraduate admissions, the 2026/27 fee picture, scholarships, advice for applicants from Pakistan, and the questions prospective students ask most. Every figure is labeled with its year or ranking edition.
UCL Overview
University College London (UCL) is a public research university in the Bloomsbury area of central London, founded in 1826. It is a broad, multidisciplinary institution covering the sciences, engineering, medicine, architecture and the built environment, law, social sciences, humanities, arts, and education. UCL was founded as a secular university open to students regardless of religion, and it was the first university in England to admit women on equal terms with men (1878).
Undergraduate applications go through UCAS, the UK’s central admissions service (UCL’s institution code is U80). Postgraduate applications are made directly to UCL, programme by programme.
UCL Rankings — QS World University Rankings 2027
UCL is ranked joint 8th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in June 2026, tied with ETH Zurich. It moved up from 9th in the previous edition. In this edition MIT ranked 1st, Imperial College London and Stanford tied for 2nd, Oxford 4th, Harvard 5th, Cambridge 6th, and Caltech 7th.
QS ranks universities using academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student-to-faculty ratio, and measures of international faculty and students. This is a QS-specific result, not one universal ranking. Times Higher Education and ARWU use different methods and can order the same universities differently.

Admission Requirements
Undergraduate and postgraduate admission work differently at UCL. Details below were checked in October 2026; confirm them on UCL’s website before applying.
Undergraduate Admissions (via UCAS)
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| How to apply | Through UCAS, using UCL’s institution code U80. International applicants use the same system as UK applicants. |
| Main deadline | 6pm UK time on 13 January 2027 for equal consideration for 2027 entry. Medicine (MBBS) has an earlier UCAS deadline of 15 October 2026. |
| Application fee | UCAS charges an application fee (reported at £34.50 for 2027 entry; check UCAS for the current amount) |
| Academic level | Offers are made against specific grades in A-levels, the IB, or other qualifications, and vary by programme. UCL publishes an entry-requirements page for each country. |
| English language | Most programmes require a recognised English test; the standard level is commonly around IELTS 6.5 overall, and some programmes ask for more. Check your programme’s level. |
| Other requirements | A personal statement and a reference. Some programmes also ask for admissions tests or interviews. |
Postgraduate Admissions

UCL Acceptance Rate
UCL does not publish one official headline acceptance rate for all students, and rates differ a great deal between programmes. Medicine, law, economics, and computer science are far more competitive than many other courses.
Education websites report 2025/26 undergraduate figures of about 89,000 applications, roughly 38,700 offers (an offer rate of about 43%), and roughly 9,100 students enrolling. These numbers are third-party reports, not an official UCL acceptance rate, and UCAS applicants can apply to several universities, so applications are not directly comparable with a single-choice system.
The older figure of ’12–15%’ that circulates online is an unverified estimate. Use the entry requirements for your specific programme as your real guide.
Practical Application Checklist
- Choose your programme and level (undergraduate or postgraduate) first, because the route differs
- For undergraduate study, register with UCAS and note the 13 January 2027 deadline (15 October 2026 for Medicine)
- Check UCL’s country page for the entry grades required for your qualification
- Book an English test if your programme requires one, and check the minimum scores per component
- Prepare a personal statement, transcripts, and references early
- Look into scholarships and funding before accepting an offer, because deadlines can be earlier than the course deadline
- Plan for fees, deposits, and London living costs
- Apply directly to UCL and UCAS, with no paid agent needed
- Verify every date, fee, and requirement on UCL’s official website before submitting
Fees & Costs
UCL sets overseas tuition fees by programme, so there is no single figure. Examples and reported ranges, all labelled by year:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate overseas fee, example (BA English, 2026/27) | £32,000 per year as listed on UCAS |
| Undergraduate overseas fees, general range | Commonly reported at roughly £29,800 to over £60,000 per year depending on programme; medical and clinical courses are at the top (third-party report) |
| Fee changes | UCL states overseas fees are set at the rate for the year you start; check your offer for how fees may change during the course |
| Deposit | Reported at 10% of the first-year fee for some overseas offers, depending on the programme (check your offer) |
| UCAS application fee | About £34.50 (reported) |
London living costs are additional. The UK government sets a minimum maintenance requirement for student visas, so check the current figures before budgeting.
Always confirm on the course page at UCL fees and funding. Figures can change each year.
Scholarships & Financial Aid
Funding for international students is limited and competitive:
- UCL Global Undergraduate Scholarship: a limited number of awards for overseas undergraduates from lower-income backgrounds. It does not waive English language requirements.
- Postgraduate scholarships: UCL lists several scholarships, some by country or subject. Check the scholarship finder each year.
- UK-wide schemes: scholarships such as Chevening and the Commonwealth awards are open to applicants from many countries, including Pakistan, with their own eligibility rules
- HEC Pakistan: the Higher Education Commission has funding programmes for study abroad; check current eligibility
See also our guide to fully funded scholarships for 2027. Scholarships are not guaranteed.
UCL for Pakistani Students
Pakistani applicants use the same process as other international applicants. UCL has no separate Pakistan track. Practical points:
- Qualifications: UCL publishes entry requirements by country. Check the Pakistan page for A-level, IB, HSSC, or bachelor’s degree equivalences.
- English: prepare IELTS or another accepted test. Our IELTS preparation guides can help.
- Funding: plan for overseas fees plus London living costs, and apply early for any scholarship
- Visa: international students normally need a UK Student visa. The decision is made by the UK government, not by UCL, and no outcome is guaranteed.
- Agents: you can apply directly, so a paid agent is not required
Campus & Student Life
- UCL’s main campus is on Gower Street in Bloomsbury, central London, close to the British Museum and many other cultural institutions
- The university has additional sites across London, including the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park campus (UCL East)
- The Students’ Union runs many societies and sports clubs
- London is expensive, so budget for housing early; UCL offers accommodation to many first-year students (check eligibility and deadlines)
Research & Career Opportunities
- UCL has a very large research output in medicine, neuroscience, engineering, social science, and the humanities
- Its London location gives access to major employers in finance, technology, healthcare, law, and the arts
- The UK Graduate Route visa, if you qualify, can allow some international graduates to stay and work for a limited period; check current UK rules
- UCL does not guarantee employment, salary, or visa outcomes
Notable Alumni
- Mahatma Gandhi — studied law in London in 1888–89 and is commonly associated with UCL
- Alexander Graham Bell — attended UCL in the 1860s
