What about the AI model?
An automation tool is the body; the model is the brain. Most agents call a model through an API key. Some providers offer a limited free API tier for testing (for example Google AI Studio, with rate limits), and you can run open models locally with Ollama, which n8n supports. Free tiers can change, so read the provider’s current terms.

Earlier versions of this guide recommended AgentGPT. Its developer archived the GitHub repository on 28 January 2026, so it no longer receives updates or security fixes. Use an actively maintained tool instead.

Build Your First No-Code AI Agent with n8n, Step by Step
Project: a morning digest agent that reads a news feed and writes a short summary for you. It is safe for beginners because it only reads and writes text; it cannot send or delete anything.
- Pick how to run n8n. Easiest: start the 14-day Cloud trial at n8n.io. Free long-term option: self-host the Community Edition with Docker (needs Docker installed):

Then open http://localhost:5678 in your browser.
- Create a workflow and add a Schedule Trigger (for example, every day at 8:00).
- Add data: use an RSS Read or HTTP Request node for a news feed you trust.
- Add the AI Agent node and connect a chat model with your own API key (or a local Ollama model). Paste a clear system prompt:
You are a research assistant for a Pakistani student. Goal: every morning, read the news items you receive and write a digest. Rules: - Use only the items provided. Never invent facts or links. - Max 5 bullet points, each under 25 words, plus the source link. - If an item is unclear, write "unverified" next to it. - Do not send or delete anything; only produce text.
- Add an output: write to Google Sheets, or send yourself a Telegram or Gmail message. Keep it to yourself while testing.
- Test, then activate. Click Execute workflow, read every result, and fix the prompt. Activate only after several good runs.
Prefer Make?
Make works the same way visually: Scheduler, RSS module, an AI module, then Gmail or Sheets. On the free plan, count credits first: modules per run × runs per month must stay under 1,000.
Common Mistakes, Limits and Hidden Costs
- Vague goals: “summarize news” gives random results. Name the format, length and rules.
- No limits: set a maximum number of steps and a spending cap on your AI provider account.
- Too much access: start with read-only tools. Add sending, paying or deleting only with a human approval step.
- Trusting output: models can invent details. Require sources and check them.
- Exposed keys: never paste API keys in public posts, screenshots or shared workflows.
