Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) — Full Profile & Ranking 2026

IIT Delhi began in 1961 as the College of Engineering and Technology and later became one of India’s Indian Institutes of Technology. Its campus is in the Hauz Khas area of South Delhi. The IITs are public institutes of national importance, and admission to their undergraduate programmes is highly competitive.

IIT Delhi is known for engineering, computer science and technology, and has a strong start-up culture supported by its innovation and technology-transfer bodies, including the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT).

IIT Delhi is 118th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, up from 123rd in the 2026 edition. A news report on the 2027 results says it remained the highest-ranked Indian institution for the second year in a row. IIT Bombay is ranked 134th, down from 129th.

This is a QS-specific result, not one universal ranking. Times Higher Education, U.S. News and ARWU use different methods and can order universities differently.

The tagline says “highest-ranked institution ever”. We could not confirm that all-time claim, and IIT Bombay has also held a high QS position in earlier editions, so treat the tagline as unverified.

IIT Delhi does not publish one acceptance rate. Undergraduate entry is rank-based and extremely competitive, because many students sit JEE for a limited number of seats. The old “about 2%” figure was not tied to a source.

The 2026 DASA undergraduate brochure lists participating institutes as NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other government-funded technical institutes. It does not list the IITs, so the earlier claim that international applicants reach IIT through DASA has been removed.

We could not read a current IIT Delhi fee table for international students, so this page does not quote a figure. The old figure of INR 200,000 to 250,000 a year applied to domestic students and was not tied to a source. Fee structures differ for Indian and foreign students and by programme.
