Boston University Admission Guide 2027: How to Apply, What It Costs and How to Fund It
Boston University admission is competitive, expensive and very doable if you plan the year in the right order. This Boston University Admission Guide 2027 follows the path a real applicant takes: why BU, what it asks for, when to apply, what you will pay and how to fund it. It is written for students from every country, and a short section for Pakistani applicants closes the article. Looking for rankings and a quick profile first? Read our Boston University profile and QS ranking page.
Why Do Students Choose Boston University?
BU is a large private research university in the middle of Boston, and its campus runs along the Charles River rather than sitting behind a gate. That city setting is the main reason applicants pick it: internships, hospitals, start-ups and media companies are a short ride from class. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 it is joint 94th, although other ranking systems use different methods and may order universities differently.
It also attracts a global crowd. According to BU’s class profile, 21% of the Class of 2029 are international students, so you will not be the only one navigating visas and time zones. If you are still comparing options, our guides to NYU, Columbia and Cornell cover similar US choices.
What Is the Boston University Acceptance Rate?
BU does not publish one simple admit rate on its class profile. What it does show is 76,776 applications and 3,450 enrolled students for the fall 2025 entry. Enrolled is not the same as admitted, so dividing one by the other would give you a wrong percentage.
The practical lesson is that selectivity is high and varies by school. Treat any single percentage from a blog or agent as a rough guess unless it names a primary source.
Boston University Requirements for International Students
International first-year applicants apply through the BU international applicant checklist. In plain terms you need:
- The Common Application, including your essay and BU’s supplement.
- School transcripts in English or officially translated, plus senior-year grades sent by your counsellor (first-term grades for Early Decision, first-semester grades for Regular Decision).
- An English test: TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or the Duolingo English Test. BU’s TOEFL code is 3087, and IELTS results go to the account named Boston University Undergraduate Admissions. BU also describes a separate waiver request process if you think you qualify.
- Maths for business applicants: Questrom asks for a year of calculus, or a year of precalculus plus a year of AP Statistics.
- SAT or ACT is optional: BU’s admissions FAQ states a test-optional policy for first-years through fall 2028 / spring 2029 entry.

Boston University Tuition and Fees: What Will You Really Pay?
On its tuition and aid page BU lists tuition of US$73,024, fees of US$1,570, housing of US$13,170, food of US$7,570 and other expenses of US$3,085. That adds up to a total cost of attendance of US$98,419. The page does not label the academic year, so confirm it before you finalise a budget.
To see the bigger picture, here is simple arithmetic using those listed figures (our calculation, not a BU quote, and it ignores yearly increases and flights):
- Four years at the listed total: about US$393,676.
- If you won the Presidential Scholarship at half tuition (US$36,512 a year), the yearly total drops to about US$61,907, or roughly US$247,628 over four years.
Even a large merit award leaves a big gap, which is why the funding plan must come before the application, not after the offer.
Boston University Scholarships for International Students
BU’s first-year merit scholarships include the Presidential Scholarship, listed at half tuition per year for fall 2026 entrants. International students can be considered, there is no extra form, but you must apply by 1 December.
The same BU pages state that need-based aid is not currently available to international students. At graduate level, some colleges consider all international applicants for merit awards. The College of Communication, for example, mentions awards of US$38,000+ per year, though amounts depend on programme and cycle. For outside funding, browse our list of fully funded scholarships for 2027.
Which BU School Should You Apply To?
First-year applicants choose a school or college on the application, even though most students do not need to declare a major until later. Communication suits journalism, media and film but is especially selective. Questrom School of Business fits finance, marketing and management, and carries the maths requirement above. Engineering is strong in areas such as biomedical engineering, while Arts & Sciences is the flexible choice if your direction is still open. Medical and health pathways differ by programme, so read each programme’s page carefully.
Mistakes That Cost Applicants
- Applying in January when the scholarship date is 1 December.
- Choosing Early Decision without a funding plan.
- Counting on need-based aid that international students cannot receive.
- Booking the English test so late that scores miss the deadline.
- Skipping the maths prerequisite for business.
After you are admitted, the university’s International Students and Scholars Office and bu.edu are the official sources for I-20 and visa steps. Questions before applying can go to intadmis@bu.edu.
