Caltech Admission Guide 2027: Requirements, Deadlines, Aid and Costs for International Students
Caltech admission is small, scientific and very selective: only a few hundred students enrol each year. This Caltech Admission Guide 2027 explains the Restrictive Early Action and Regular Decision rounds, the required SAT or ACT, what the need-aware rule means for international families, the 2026–27 cost of attendance and the visa steps, using Caltech and other official sources checked in October 2026. For rankings and a quick overview, see our Caltech profile page.
Caltech QS Ranking 2027 and Why Size Matters
Caltech is 7th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and it reaches that position with fewer than 1,000 undergraduates. Its research profile is out of proportion to its size, and it manages NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Small classes and close contact with researchers are the main reasons applicants choose it over larger schools such as the MIT route.

What Is the Caltech Acceptance Rate?
Caltech’s own Class of 2029 figures show 427 admitted students from 11,285 applicants, which is about 3.78%. A small class means every place is contested, and international applicants face an extra aid constraint (below).

Caltech Financial Aid and the Need-Aware Rule
- Need-aware for international applicants: Caltech says its international aid budget is limited, so need can be a factor in admission decisions for international citizens.
- Full need met if offered aid: Caltech meets 100% of demonstrated need for the students it offers aid to, with no loans in the standard package.
- Request aid at first application. If you do not request it then, you generally cannot add it later.
- If you are not offered aid, you must be able to pay the full cost before committing.
- No aid for international transfers.
Families earning under about US$100,000 are generally not expected to pay tuition or fees, according to Caltech-based figures, but confirm current thresholds on its financial aid site.
F-1 Visa and Life in Pasadena
International students enter the US on an F-1 visa using the I-20 that Caltech issues after you accept and show funding. Caltech is in Pasadena, California, and houses undergraduates on campus in its House system. After graduation, F-1 students may apply for Optional Practical Training, with an extension for STEM degrees, but visa and work rules change.
Mistakes That Cost Caltech Applicants
- Not requesting aid at first application and losing the chance later.
- Assuming need-blind treatment applies to international applicants.
- Choosing Restrictive Early Action without checking its limits.
- Treating a small class as an easier one.
- Skipping the international interview that Caltech recommends.
