Harvard University Admission Guide 2027: How to Apply, Financial Aid, Costs and Requirements for International Students

By PHL EDU WITH AI · Facts checked October 2026 · About 13 minutes to read

Harvard University admission is one of the hardest in the world to win, but it is also one of the most open to international students on money. This Harvard University Admission Guide 2027 explains how to apply to Harvard College for fall 2027 entry, what the SAT or ACT rule means, how need-based aid works for non-US families, what Harvard really costs, how the graduate schools differ and what to know about the student visa. Every figure comes from Harvard’s own pages or other official sources and was checked in October 2026. For rankings and a quick overview, read our Harvard University profile page.

Why Do Students Aim for Harvard?

Harvard, founded in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the oldest university in the United States. It ranks 5th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and you can compare it with every other top-100 university in our World’s Top 100 Universities directory. Undergraduates study at Harvard College, a liberal arts and sciences college where you pick a field (called a concentration) after starting. The wider university adds graduate schools such as Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School and the Kennedy School.

Two features matter most to international applicants. First, Harvard says its admission and aid processes are the same for every nationality, with no quota for international students. Second, its aid is large enough that cost does not have to rule out a strong applicant. Harvard’s own figures show that about 16% of the Class of 2029 comes from outside the United States by permanent address.

What Is the Harvard Acceptance Rate?

The latest full set of numbers on Harvard’s admissions statistics page is for the Class of 2029: 47,893 applications and 2,003 admitted students, which works out to about 4.2% (our calculation from Harvard’s numbers). Of those, 1,675 enrolled and 75 came off the waiting list.

Two cautions. Harvard did not publish statistics when it released decisions for the Class of 2030 in March 2026, and it says it publishes annual data in the autumn, so check that page for newer figures before you quote any rate. Also, one entering class is not your cycle’s rate. Use the percentage as a reminder that a strong profile is not enough on its own, not as a number to predict your result.

Harvard Admission Requirements for International Students

Harvard reads applications as a whole, and the official requirements for first-year applicants are the same everywhere. Plan to submit:

  • The Common Application plus Harvard’s five short-answer questions of up to 150 words each. Harvard is also a QuestBridge partner.
  • A school report with transcript and a midyear school report from your counsellor. IB and A-level schools also send predicted grades.
  • Two teacher recommendations from teachers of different academic subjects who know you well.
  • SAT or ACT scores (see the next section). Harvard states there are no score cutoffs.
  • An optional alumni interview, offered where an alumni interviewer is available. Not receiving an interview does not hurt your application.

Documents not in English can be submitted with a translation, but Harvard asks you not to translate them yourself and to include the original with any translation. Prepare clean scans with our PDF Toolkit.

SAT, ACT and English Test Rules

SAT or ACT is required. Harvard reinstated its standardized testing requirement in April 2024, and the current cycle is the second year of that rule. Results from AP, IB, A-level, GCSE or national exams can stand in only in exceptional cases when an SAT or ACT is not accessible to you. Register early enough to report scores before your deadline.

English proficiency exams are not required for first-year applicants. You may send TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores if you wish, but they cannot replace the SAT or ACT. Strong written English still matters for the essays, so build vocabulary with our One Word, One Page vocabulary database and the 1,500 advanced English words list, and polish drafts in the AI Language Studio. Our IELTS preparation guides help if you also plan to apply elsewhere.

How to Apply to Harvard: Step by Step

  1. 12 to 18 months before: choose the strongest courses available at your school and plan your SAT or ACT dates.
  2. Summer before senior year: draft your main essay and Harvard’s five short answers, and ask two teachers for recommendations early.
  3. September and October: decide between Restrictive Early Action and Regular Decision, and run the Net Price Calculator with your family’s figures.
  4. By 1 November or 1 January: submit the Common Application and supplement. If you want aid, submit the aid forms on the matching date.
  5. After applying: have your counsellor send the school report, the midyear report and any predicted grades.
  6. Decision time: compare offers and aid packages, and respond by the reply deadline.
  7. After admission: request your visa documents and start the F-1 process (see below).

Harvard Tuition and Cost of Attendance

For 2026–27, Harvard College lists tuition of US$62,226, fees of US$6,216, housing of US$14,250 and food of US$8,942. That makes billed costs of US$91,634. Adding estimated personal expenses, books and travel gives a total of US$95,134 to US$100,134, and health insurance costs an extra US$4,954 unless a family plan covers you. See Harvard’s How Aid Works page for the official table.

Simple arithmetic shows why the sticker price misleads (our calculation from those figures, before any increase). Four years at the billed rate add up to about US$366,500. But if a family is in the band where aid covers all of tuition, the remaining billed costs are fees, housing and food, which total US$29,408 a year, and Harvard says more aid is likely at that level.

Harvard Financial Aid for International Students

This is Harvard’s biggest advantage for international applicants. According to Harvard College’s financial aid materials:

  • Need-based only: there are no academic, athletic or merit scholarships. All aid is based on demonstrated financial need.
  • Equal treatment: applying for aid does not hurt your chance of admission, including for international applicants, and Harvard meets 100% of demonstrated need.
  • Family income of US$100,000 or less (with typical assets): US$0 billed cost of attendance.
  • Income between US$100,000 and US$200,000: free tuition, with additional aid likely.
  • Above US$200,000: many families still qualify, depending on circumstances.
  • No loans required: Harvard says 100% of its students can graduate debt-free. Students are still expected to contribute from earnings, and aid recipients receive a travel allowance.

Harvard also reports that 55% of its students receive aid and 25% attend free. Remember that these thresholds assume typical assets and that large assets raise what a family is asked to pay. Run the Net Price Calculator before applying, and meet the aid deadlines of 1 November (Restrictive Early Action) or 1 February (Regular Decision). Applications for aid normally use the CSS Profile, and Harvard’s institution code there is 3434. Confirm the exact forms for non-US families on the financial aid website.

Harvard Graduate and Professional School Admission

Graduate admission at Harvard is a different process for each school. Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, the Kennedy School, Harvard Medical School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences each set their own deadlines, tests and English requirements. For example, the Harvard MBA uses two rounds, with Round 1 already closed on 9 September 2026 and Round 2 closing on 5 January 2027. Funding is also different at graduate level, so check each school’s own aid page rather than assuming the undergraduate rules apply.

Student Visa and the Current Harvard Situation

Admitted international students normally study on an F-1 visa. Harvard’s International Office issues the visa documents, and the US government (not Harvard) decides each visa. In 2025 the US Department of Homeland Security tried to revoke Harvard’s authorisation to enrol international students, and federal court orders blocked that action. Harvard’s International Office has said its certification remains active while the case continues, with a final legal resolution still pending. Because this is a live legal matter, read Harvard’s official SEVP FAQ before you commit, and also check US government visa rules for your country.

After a US degree, F-1 students can usually apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), with an extension for qualifying STEM degrees. Policies change, so verify current rules and never assume a job or visa outcome.

Student Life at Harvard

First-year students live in dormitories in and around Harvard Yard, then move into one of Harvard’s residential Houses. Cambridge sits across the Charles River from Boston, and Harvard students can also cross-register for some courses at neighbouring universities such as MIT. Harvard reports graduation rates of 97% to 98% (see the concentrations page for what you can study). Among the Class of 2029, intended fields were 35% social sciences, 27% natural sciences, 25% engineering and 12% humanities.

Mistakes That Cost Applicants

  • Skipping the SAT or ACT because English proficiency exams are optional (they are not a substitute).
  • Missing the separate financial aid dates of 1 November or 1 February.
  • Assuming a low acceptance percentage means grades alone guarantee nothing, then ignoring essays and recommendations.
  • Choosing Restrictive Early Action without reading its limits on other early programmes.
  • Translating school documents yourself instead of submitting the original with an official translation.
  • Quoting last year’s tuition. The 2026–27 figures are different from older numbers online.
