CUHK QS Ranking 2027 and What CUHK Offers
CUHK is 18th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It has eight faculties, a collegiate system, over 9,000 hostel places and a bilingual, bicultural approach to teaching. See all ranked universities in our World’s Top 100 Universities directory.
Compare it with the HKU admission guide, which uses a similar non-local route with different fees and dates.
What Is the CUHK Acceptance Rate?
CUHK does not publish an overall acceptance rate for non-local applicants. Competition depends on the programme and your qualification, and CUHK states that each application is assessed individually. Use the published admissions requirements for your qualification and avoid third-party percentages without sources.
CUHK Entry Requirements for International Students

CUHK Tuition Fees for International Students
Non-local tuition for 2026–27 is HK$214,000 a year, compared with HK$47,000 for local students. For the 2026 cohort, any yearly fee adjustment is capped at 3%. Dual-degree programmes may differ. The hostel fee for 2025–26 was about HK$17,000, depending on the hostel type, and 2026–27 figures were not yet confirmed.
Tuition plus the hostel fee is about HK$231,000 a year before food, transport and other costs (our calculation). That is below HKU’s non-local fees of HK$224,000 (non-STEM) and HK$249,000 (STEM) for the same year, so compare the full cost, not only the tuition.
CUHK Scholarships for International Students
- Automatic admission scholarships: every applicant admitted to a full-time undergraduate programme is automatically considered, with no separate application, and awards can cover partial or full tuition and living allowance.
- School Nomination Scheme: schools can nominate up to three students, and the awards for the 2026–27 cohort ran up to full scholarships covering four years of tuition and a living allowance. Nominees are typically in roughly the top 10% of their class.
- Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme: a government-funded research package for the 2027–28 intake worth up to about HK$1.81 million, with an initial application to RGC by 1 December 2026.
- Other funding: compare options in our fully funded scholarships for 2027 guide.
CUHK Hostels and Living in Hong Kong
International students admitted to full-time undergraduate study are eligible for on-campus residence under CUHK’s N–2 residence policy, which guarantees hostel places for most of your degree. Hong Kong rents are high, so hostel places are valuable. CUHK’s campus is in Sha Tin, with fast rail links to central Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Student Visa and Staying After Graduation
Non-local students need a student visa or entry permit sponsored by CUHK. After graduation, eligible non-local graduates may apply under the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG), which the HKU guide explains in detail. Rules change, and no job or visa outcome is guaranteed.
Mistakes That Cost CUHK Applicants
- Assuming the 2026 dates apply unchanged to 2027 entry.
- Submitting more than one undergraduate application.
- Comparing only tuition, not hostel and living costs.
- Missing the School Nomination date because your school did not know.
- Waiting for final results before applying when you can apply first.
