University of Manchester Admission Guide 2027: Entry Requirements, Fees, Scholarships and How to Apply
University of Manchester admission works differently from the US or Australian system, and most applicants lose time by learning that too late. This University of Manchester Admission Guide 2027 explains the whole route for students from any country: UCAS and direct applications, entry and English requirements, fees, visa money, scholarships and housing. Every deadline and figure was checked against official Manchester and UK government pages in October 2026. For rankings and a quick overview, see our University of Manchester profile page.
Why Do International Students Choose Manchester?
Three reasons come up again and again. First, reputation: Manchester is joint 40th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and it belongs to the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities. Second, cost relative to London: living costs and the UK visa money requirement are lower outside the capital (details below). Third, scale and community: it recruits students from roughly 170 countries and offers an accommodation guarantee to eligible international students.
If you are still comparing UK options, read our guides to UCL, King’s College London and the University of Bristol alongside this one.
What Is the University of Manchester Acceptance Rate?
Manchester does not publish a single acceptance rate for all courses. Third-party sites quote figures such as 56% and 59.3%, which already disagree with each other, and none is tied to an official dataset. The truth is that selectivity changes by course: medicine, dentistry, business, computer science and some engineering programmes are far harder than the university-wide picture suggests. Judge your chances from the course page’s grade requirements, not from one percentage.
University of Manchester Entry Requirements for International Students
Bachelor’s degrees. Offers are course-specific and usually conditional on your final exam results. Manchester’s Pakistan guidance, for example, shows direct-entry A-level offers ranging from A*AA to ABB depending on the course, with subject requirements on top (for example maths for engineering). Other systems, such as IB, US high school with AP, or national school-leaving certificates, are matched to these standards on each course page and in the country-specific entry pages.
Foundation routes. If your qualification falls short of direct entry, Manchester works with INTO Manchester on an International Foundation Year, and some science and engineering courses have an integrated foundation year. A foundation route adds a year of fees, so compare it with a stronger final-exam target before choosing it.
Master’s degrees. Taught master’s programmes (MSc, MA, MRes, MBA) ask for a good bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, an English test, transcripts and, for many courses, a personal statement and references. PhD and research degrees are supervised individually, so contact a potential supervisor and read the programme’s own deadline, which can be much earlier. For example, one humanities PhD page lists 30 September 2026 for January 2027 entry.
English Language Requirements
- The score depends on your course. Each course page lists its own minimum; there is no single university-wide number.
- Many global tests are accepted (IELTS Academic and several equivalents). Check your course page for the exact list before booking.
- “My degree was taught in English” is not accepted by Manchester as proof, according to its Pakistan entry page. Plan to take a test unless a listed exemption applies to you.
- Validity matters. Some tests expire after two years, and your report must still be valid on the day your course starts.
- Timing: at least one postgraduate course page says it only assesses applications that already include an English test result. Test first, apply second.

How to Apply to the University of Manchester
Undergraduate: through UCAS only. All undergraduate applicants, UK or international, apply through UCAS. Manchester’s UCAS code is M20 MANU. One UCAS form carries up to five course choices, plus a personal statement and a reference. Most courses typically do not interview, with interviews reserved for programmes such as medicine.
Postgraduate: directly to Manchester. Taught master’s and research applications go through the university’s own online system. Many courses use rolling review or staged deadlines, for example one language and culture master’s lists staged closing dates on 1 March, 4 May and 4 July 2027. Popular courses can close early, so apply as soon as your documents are ready.
Documents to prepare: transcripts (officially translated if not in English), passport, English test report, personal statement, references and, for research degrees, a research proposal. Use our PDF Toolkit to merge and compress scans, and the AI Language Studio to polish your statement.

University of Manchester International Student Fees and Your Real Budget
Fees depend on the course, and the university says 2027 postgraduate fees had not yet been set when we checked, so use 2026/27 prices as a planning base only. Manchester’s own 2026/27 examples give a sense of scale: undergraduate business at Alliance Manchester Business School is £33,100 a year and an MA in International Relations is £29,400. Undergraduate fees for later years can rise (Manchester’s example allows up to 7% a year), and placement or study-abroad years are charged at a reduced share of the fee.
Here is a one-year master’s cash plan using those figures (our simple calculation, not an official quote):
| Item | Amount (£) |
|---|---|
| Tuition, MA example | 29,400 |
| Visa living-cost funds you must show (from 30 Nov 2026, outside London) | 10,827 |
| Student visa application fee | 558 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (one year; charged by visa length) | 776 |
| Minimum cash to plan around | 41,561 |
The visa funds are a threshold, not a full budget. Manchester’s own cost guidance lists self-catered halls from about £4,853 to £12,096 a year, and groceries, transport, books and travel come on top. Also expect a tuition deposit: Manchester’s examples include £2,500 for self-funded international master’s applicants before a CAS is issued.
UK Student Visa Money and Rules for Manchester
Once you hold an offer and meet its conditions, Manchester issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), which you need for the UK Student visa. Key facts from GOV.UK and the Home Office:
- Funds: Manchester is outside London, so the rate is £1,171 a month for up to nine months (£10,539) today. For applications from 30 November 2026 it rises to £1,203 a month (£10,827). London needs £1,529 now (£13,761), so studying in Manchester lowers the proof-of-funds amount by about £3,200.
- Funds must be held for a continuous 28 days. Read the money rules before you move any savings.
- Fees: £558 to apply from outside the UK (since 8 April 2026), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year of visa length.
- Timing: you can apply up to six months before your course starts, and decisions from outside the UK usually take around three weeks.
- Other checks: some nationalities must take a tuberculosis test, and some sensitive science and technology courses need ATAS clearance before the CAS is issued.
University of Manchester Scholarships for International Students
The main central scheme is Global Futures. For 2027 entry Manchester describes more than 350 undergraduate awards and more than 250 merit-based master’s awards for international students. They are paid as a discount on tuition, not as cash. Undergraduate rules include direct first-year entry, full-time study at the UK campus and Manchester as your firm UCAS choice by 15 May 2027. Master’s applicants need an unconditional offer and a separate online form by 20 April 2027. Eligible countries and amounts differ, so check yours.
Beyond Manchester, look at UK government and foundation awards such as Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships, and at funding from your own government or employer. Our list of fully funded scholarships for 2027 compares options. Always hold your offer first and remember that scholarships have separate deadlines and rules.
University of Manchester Accommodation for International Students
Manchester has more than 8,000 rooms in 19 halls and guarantees a hall place to international students who meet its conditions: arriving alone, paying overseas fees, applying for accommodation by 31 August, and meeting offer conditions (undergraduates) or firmly accepting by 31 August (postgraduates). For 2025/26 it listed halls from £119 a week for a shared-facilities self-catered room, £175 for en-suite and £184 for a catered hall, with bills and internet included. Private options, including house shares, are listed through Manchester Student Homes. See the university’s cost-of-living guide for current figures.
What Manchester Is Actually Known For
Beyond the ranking number, Manchester has a strong record in fields where you can check the evidence yourself. Researchers here isolated graphene in 2004, and the National Graphene Institute continues that work. Ernest Rutherford carried out his pioneering nuclear experiments here, and the Manchester computer built in 1948 is regarded as the first to run a stored program. The university also runs the Jodrell Bank radio astronomy site. Alliance Manchester Business School, engineering, physics, computer science, life and health sciences and the humanities are the largest draws. Manchester’s own international pages cite 26 Nobel prizes among staff and alumni.
Careers and Staying in the UK After Graduation
Greater Manchester has large health, media, finance, digital and manufacturing sectors, and the university runs a careers service for current students and recent graduates. After your degree, the Graduate Route lets eligible students work in the UK without a sponsor. GOV.UK states 2 years for applications on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s applications from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for doctoral graduates, so your application date, not your start date, decides the band. Check the official Graduate visa page and do not assume any job or visa outcome.
Mistakes That Cost Applicants
- Treating the UCAS date as the real planning date instead of finishing by December.
- Booking an English test too late, or forgetting that it must still be valid at course start.
- Assuming “English medium degree” replaces a test.
- Budgeting only tuition and ignoring visa funds, the health surcharge and rent.
- Moving funds into your account late and breaking the 28-day rule.
- Using last year’s visa figures, which changed again on 30 November 2026.

University of Manchester Admission for Pakistani Students
Pakistani applicants follow the international route above. This table turns it into a checklist, using Manchester’s Pakistan entry requirements and Pakistan scholarships pages.
| Area | What Pakistani applicants should do |
|---|---|
| Undergraduate entry | Direct entry normally needs A-levels (A*AA to ABB by course) or an equivalent such as IB. Students below that level can be considered for an INTO Manchester foundation route; Manchester’s guide mentions an overall 65% for that route |
| Postgraduate entry | Check your course page for the degree class or percentage, and the length of degree it accepts, before you pay for tests or applications |
| English | Take an accepted test (our IELTS guides help). A letter saying your degree was in English is not accepted |
| Application | Undergraduate through UCAS, with the 13 January 2027 equal consideration date. Postgraduate directly to Manchester, early |
| Scholarships | Pakistan appears on Manchester’s Global Futures country list. Also check the HEC overseas scholarships and the British Council Women in STEM awards on Manchester’s Pakistan page |
| Visa funds | Show £10,539 (or £10,827 from 30 Nov 2026) for nine months, held for 28 days, in documents the Home Office accepts. Convert PKR using the current rate and keep a buffer |
| Health and security checks | Check the GOV.UK TB test rules for Pakistan and whether your course needs ATAS. Both can delay your CAS or visa if left late |
| Start time | Begin 10 to 12 months before intake: attested documents, test dates, ATAS and appointment slots all take time |
